Photovoice

What is photovoice?

Photovoice is an approach to learning about other people’s perspectives through photography and words. Anna uses the research method of photovoice as it originated with Carolyn Wang and Mary Ann Burris in the 1990s. Anna incorporates her many years of mixed-methods research experience in applying the technique.

Who can use it?

Photovoice works across a wide range of ages, from elementary school through older adults. It can be particularly helpful for engaging with people who speak a different language from the dominant language around them, such as for Spanish-speaking people living in an English-speaking community.

What are the applications?

Through photovoice, we can learn about individual perspectives on a topic, such as barriers and facilitators to engaging in a behavior. Photovoice projects culminate in community events and opportunities to motivate and inspire policy change.
